2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac XLT Review

When it comes to pickup trucks, Ford is one fast fox. Just look at the F-150. Thanks to daring design cues, bar-raising engineering standards and consistent upgrades, we critics called it one of the best (or the best) trucks in its class the last two times it was new. Going by its status as the best-selling vehicle (vehicle, not car) on Earth (Earth, not America) for the past quarter-century, some of you seem to agree. Ford takes care of its trucks.

Its big trucks, that is. But Ford has one other truck that they haven't bothered to work on since a few presidents ago (does "Ranger" ring a bell?) Sure, we get a new grille or even a new engine now and then, but the bulk of the Ranger dates back to the early 90s (some of it, the early 80s) - a fact reflected all too clearly in its Pet Rock-era performance and refinement. Ford clearly has no qualms about showering its favorite child with attention while locking the other in the basement.

Yet a newly nurturing Ford has dug out the key, ready to spread the love - at least partway. While the official Ranger will rot away for a few years more, Ford has invited the passenger-friendly crew cab version of that truck - which always wore the name "Explorer Sport Trac" (probably to add to Explorer sales totals) - to join the rest of us in the 21st century atop a much newer sheet of design paper.
